Blue-footed boobies use their webbed feet to cover their young and keep them warm. When a typical brood of one to three chicks hatches, both parents feed and care for them.

The name booby comes from the Spanish word “bobo,” which means “clown,” and alludes to their clumsy nature on land!

Blue-footed boobies are specialized fish eaters, feeding primarily on fish such as anchovies, mackerel, sardines, and flying fish!

The trademark blue coloration of their feet comes from carotenoid pigments found in the fresh fish they eat. Carotenoids act as antixoidants, thus stimulating their immune function.  Thus, the level of pigmentation in their feet is an indicator for general immunological health!
